Avanti AT480 Treadmill Review

Avanti AT 480

Style, Beauty, Power, Comfort and Reliability are just some of the terms that can be used to describe the Avanti AT480 Treadmill. The AT480 is Avanti’s second instalment of the AT treadmill series. Like its little brother, Avanti At 380, the 480 features same quality engineering but in a larger machine. The AT480 also has some additional features that we will cover a little later.
The AT480 by Avanti Fitness has been sold throughout Australia since 2006. Featuring a 2.25Hp (horsepower) continuous duty DC motor, this running machine is a great buy for the fitness enthusiasts that enjoy longer cardio sessions in comfort. With a larger running surface of 51cm x 142 cm it's unimaginable that the AT480 folds up to a mere 70cm x 83 cm footprint. That’s Compact ! It’s no wonder that this treadmill is very popular with people who do not have much room to accommodate fitness equipment. If you are living in an apartment, small villa or simply have no space for a treadmill in your home, the AT480 is a must to inspect.

The Suspension System:

The Avanti AT480 uses the clever ImpactDown suspension system, a trademark of Avanti Fitness. ImpactDown is a twin suspension concept that delivers unparallel comfort and stability of the machine. The front of the machine features 2 heavy duty flex springs that allow the deck to behave like a coil suspended drum. This means that the shock generated by planting the foot on the deck is evenly dispersed throughout the machine. The second part of the suspension consists of 10 x 20mm commercial rubber shock absorbers that separate the deck from the frame. This unique feature coupled with the extra heavy duty Flex Deck, is what makes the Avanti AT480 treadmill one of the quietest machines on the market. The thumping noise of running is reduced considerably on the AT480. Whether you chose the 380, 480, 580 or 680 model of Avanti AT series of treadmills, you will enjoy the same cushioning system as that is precisely what makes it “The AT Series”

The Frame:

As described in the AT380 review, the AT  series uses a very well balanced, heavy set frame that is able to provide the stability of a much larger commercial machine. There no shaking of the console when a 115KG male runs on the machine and that is a good representation of the design excellence of the 480. Quite noticeable are the very large steel rollers featured on the AT480, another reason why this machine is so reliable requiring very little to service throughout its life.

Console and Functions:

The AT480 uses a quality Dot Matrix display console that differs slightly from the At 380. The main difference is the large 18 x 8 LED Dot Matrix window allowing the display of program patterns, machine to user message scrolling, a feature usually found on much larger commercial or very high quality “Class A” machines. The console also features 4x LED windows, cycling vital data display that may be of interest to users. Additional 3 x LED lights indicate users targeted heart rate zones. The machine takes Polar compatible heart rate transmitters to monitor heart rate and trigger program intensity changes according to users specified target heart rate. As with all the AT series treadmills, the AT alters both Speed and Incline simultaneously to deliver challenging workouts for the runners.

The Electronics:

Vital circuitry is fused at current entry, protecting the machine from fluctuating currents that may be present in a household. This is particularly important if you don’t have a designated power circuit in your home that is specifically allocated to a treadmill. Another notable component that deserves a mention is the motor used in the AT480. A 2.25 Hp continuous duty DC motor that is built like it belongs on a commercial machine. High torque and a thick steel fly band deliver power that is consistent and effortless for the machine. It also operates very quietly. Once the running belt wears in, the AT480 is one of the quietest operating treadmills on the market today.

Final Word:

If you are looking to spend around $2500 for a quality running machine you can not go past the Avanti AT480. With a larger running surface than its smaller brother the 380, it still folds to a very small footprint which makes this machine ideal for people with little room to spare. Delivering extreme power, this machine is ideal for runners that like to exercise in comfort and style. The AT480 makes a for a great family treadmill that is sure to impress through its reliability, quiet operation, style and comfort.

I have to agree that this is a quality treadmill. I have noticed that it is now also sold in the USA and getting rave reviews, some sites even stating that its their biggest seller. Go Aussie Go !.. I purchased my AT480 from Wollongong some 3 years ago and it hasn't skipped a beat. What more to say.. Top Machine.

#2 Solid Runner - Exceptional Build Quality - Total ComfortThe Point to Pinnacle Man 2009-12-28 05:06
I have been training on the AT480 for nearly 2 years now. Total reliability, comfort and ease of use are some of the things I as an elite runner appreciate about this model. There is a particular function for custom programming on this treadmills that allows me to completely pre-program all the event routes I compete in. The 32 different stages of the program cycle speed and incline gradients. I have owned 4 other treadmills prior to this model and can honestly say that this is the best one yet. I see there are some more models available in this range now, If I ever upgrade, I will definitely be sticking with the AT series.

If you can get your hands on this treadmill i strongly suggest you do. It is reliable and sooo comfortable. I have recommended this treadmill to all of my friends and have no hesitation in giving it a 10 out of 10.

Bought one second hand off ebay. Took a bit of fiddling to get the belt tightened correctly, but now its running great.

Getting it inside was tricky through a narrow doorway, but if you pull the locking pins out of the gas struts you can go through sideways (3 pairs of strong arms required)

I'm still chasing a manual if anyone has one scanned in somewhere!
